Things to Do

County Meath is steeped in Irish history. These are just a few well known sites we would recommend visiting;
  • Newgrange is a 5,200 year old passage tomb that leads intoa chamber that is aligned with the rising sun at the Winter Solstice. It is older than Stonehenge and the Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt   www.newgrange.com
  • Tayto Park is a family amusement park for children and adults of all ages themed around the famous Irish crisp Tayto www.taytopark.ie
  • Hill of Tara is an archaeological complex that contains a number of ancient monuments, and, according to tradition, was the seat of Árd Rí na hÉireann, or the High King of Ireland   http://hilloftara.org or http://www.irelandsancienteast.com
  • Loughcrew Megalithic Cairns Clusters of Megalithic Cairns are dotted around the Slieve na Caillaigh hills at Loughcrew. The illumination of the passage and chamber at the Winter solstice sunrise in Newgrange is world famous. Less well known is the Equinox illumination at sunrise in Cairn T at Loughcrew. The backstone of the chamber is illuminated by a beam of light at sunrise on the Spring and Autumnal Equinoxes. http://www.knowth.com/loughcrew.htm
  • Oldbridge Estate/Battle of the Boyne Visitors Centre beautiful grounds and gardens and some history of the great Battle. The largest number of troops ever deployed on an Irish battlefield.  English, Scottish, Dutch, Danes and Huguenots (French Protestants) made up Dutch Prince William of Orange's army (Williamites), while James II of England's men (Jacobites) were mainly Irish Catholics, reinforced by 6,500 French troops sent by King Louis XIV.  At stake were the British throne, French Dominance in Europe and religious power in Ireland.  http://www.battleoftheboyne.ie/
